It doesn't have to feel like a chore or a must. It can ba a fun hobby too. And the more fun it is, the fast you'll pick it up!

Want to make language learning both fun and effective? We’ve lined up seven tips to get you started.

1. Netflix

Binge-watching your favourite series? Believe it or not, but it can really help you pick up a new language. Just switch the subtitles to Spanish, French or even Korean. You’ll be reading and listening to the language without even realising it. Do you want to improve your listening skills, for example? Then watch an exciting German krimi or the Spanish series La Casa de Papel with Dutch subtitles. Learning a new language while chilling on the couch. What's not to love?

2. Singing

Music to your ears? Dive into the lyrics of your favourite artist, study them, and try translating them. And don't worry if you can't carry a tune: singing off-key is totally fine! Try reading and translating the lyrics of Hélène Fischer. Before you know it, you’ll be chatting away in German and belting out the lyrics at the next Après Ski party. Whether you’re in tune or not!

Extra tip: On LyricsTraining you can complete the lyrics that appear on your screen. So you can combine listening and writing.

3. Duolingo, Babbel & Drops

If you’ve ever wanted to learn a new language, chances are you’ve heard of Duolingo. And for good reason! You hardly need to set aside any time for it. As soon as you have time, open the app for a few minutes. Waiting for the bus? Do a quick lesson. Hitting the snooze button? Fit in one more round. Don't forget to check out Babbel and Drops too. These apps offer even more languages, including Japanese and Latin American Spanish. Perfect for a busy day without feeling like studying.

4. Children's books and comic

Read, read, read! It’s still the best way to quickly master a language. But let's be honest, starting can be quite tough. So grab a children's book or a comic book. The vocabulary remains simple, and you have pictures from which you can easily deduce the context.

5. Post-its

No more motivation to practise those long, dry, and boring vocabulary lists? We have an idea! Stick post-its on your furniture. Every time you make lunch, you'll see the French word for fridge staring back at you. You'll build your vocabulary without even realising it! 🤓

6. Phone

Want to go the extra mile? Then switch your phone or laptop settings to your new language. You’ll quickly pick up the basics without even trying. While you use an app, scroll through your socials or play a game, you'll automatically come across new words, without the need to dive into the books.

7. Chat

And then the most important tip: talk! Speaking is still the fastest way to learn a language. Challenge your friends and host a Spanish-themed night. Practice conversations and make paella together. Yes, it's that easy to learn a language. And don’t stress about getting it right. You don’t have to be perfect. Mistakes are part of the process, and the best way to learn!
